Curriculum

We follow the National Curriculum Standards as prescribed by the Department of Education.  It has been amended for learners with intellectual abilities.

School to Work Programme

This programme includes the following:

· House Keeping

· Baking

· Vegetable processing / Vegetable Garden

· Car Wash

· Garden Services

· Entrepreneurs: Boys

· Entrepreneurs: Girls

· Paper making

External Work

In the Skills Development Program, selected learners in the Senior Phase, older than sixteen years, are placed at work places in the community.  New skills are learnt, existing skills are improved and they are exposed to a realistic working environment.  Learners work on certain days of the week, during school hours, and make use of school transport.  No remuneration is paid. At present 20 learners are placed at  nursery schools, hair salon, doggy parlour, garage, supermarkets, restaurant and home industry (baking).

Internal Work

Learners are also placed on the Internal program, where they perform certain tasks at school eg. Preparing tea for break time, helping in the kitchen and assisting in Junior Phase classes and working in the garden.  The learners benefit from the program and enjoy expanding their skills.

What are the learners capable of?

They possess the following skills:

· Carrying out of repetitive tasks eg. folding boxes / letters, sticking on of labels / stamps, loading / unloading, rolling calendars, grouping objects according to a jig eg. Packing specific types or amounts of sweets for a party pack etc.

· Simple cleaning activities and selected household tasks.

· Counting, measuring and grouping.

· Sorting and packaging.

Points to be taken into consideration

· Learners cannot accept full responsibility for tasks.

· They must work under supervision.
